On May 6, celebrities and designers flocked to the Metropolitan Museum of Art for its annual Met Gala, celebrating the Costume Institute’s newest exhibition, “Camp: Notes on Fashion.” In order to capture that utterly eccentric aesthetic sensibility (described so persuasively in Susan Sontag’s 1964 essay “Notes on ‘Camp’ ”), celebrities drew on fashions both silly and sublime. And just like VOGUE wrote about the event:
The 2019 Met Gala was definitely not lacking spectacular red carpet moments. From Lady Gaga to Katy Perry, Kendall Jenner to Gigi Hadid, guests transformed the party’s venerable venue into a feather- and flounce-filled fantasia—each doing their best to step up to the grand occasion. In addition to our list of the evening’s best-dressed stars, here you’ll see every suit, cape, and gown that graced the Met’s dramatic front steps.
Gaga’s vivid pink ensemble quite literally stopped traffic as her lengthy, 25-foot train needed to be carried by five dancers, who were followed by a person pulling a matching wagon that read “Haus of Gaga” in elegant script. Inside the carriage were clear luggage cases from designer Brandon Maxwell‘s Spring 2019 collection, accessories like a hairbrush and sunglasses, cowboy hats inspired her Joanne era and a black phone from the ’90s. To complete her debut look, Gaga wore a matching pink bow and larger-than-life lashes that transformed into gold accents at the tip. One of the favorites of the night!
Actor Jared Leto once again made waves at the Met Gala, this time by walking the pink carpet while carrying a model of his head. The 47-year-old Oscar winner teamed up with fashion house Gucci for his outfit and accessory, which caused many double-takes among attendees at the Metropolitan Museum Of Art in New York City. Leto wore a long-sleeved silk red gown with diamond details on the bodice, which fitted well with the theme for the night, Camp: Notes On Fashion. However, it was what Leto held in his hand that caught the most attention!
Kendall and Kylie were also at the event and completely embraced the Camp theme this year in brightly colored feather dresses. The camp is all about color and extravagance, and they served it on a platter. Kendall was basically the human version of the fire emoji with orange feathers surrounding her head, and Kylie looked like Ursula the sea witch with lilac hair and a matching feather boa. And we loved it!
Kim Kardashian West adores Thierry Mugler. “He is the king of camp, he invented camp,” said Kardashian at a recent fitting for her Met Gala dress. Spun with silk organza and dripping with sparkling crystals, the Mugler number was made to mimic the wet shirtdress that Sophia Loren wore in the 1957 film Boy on a Dolphin. Getting into the waist-whittling look was no small feat. How great is this look?
For a theme entitled “Camp: Notes on Fashion,” the Danish model and first-time Met Gala attendee, Josephine Skriver, made sure to show up. Think hundreds of hand-embroidered silk flowers, crystals, beading, and feathers atop a custom nude silk gazar dress, head crown, and thigh-high boots. Gilded baubles and petal-like diamond rings drape her lobes and limbs. It’s a type of exuberant entrance that calls for only one beauty look.
When Cardi B rocked up at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art for the 2019 Met Gala on Monday night, she did so sporting one of the most head-turning looks of the evening: a giant, red, feather and jewel-adorned Thom Browne gown with a 10-foot train and protruding ruby nipples. Cardi said:
The inspiration behind it was feminism. This reflects the woman’s body. You got the little boobies, vajayjay, and booty — and then, of course, camp.
When Ashley Graham and Dapper Dan joined forces, a major fashion moment was bound to occur. The supermodel’s bold personality and the style innovator’s outré aesthetic were a perfect match for the Met Gala’s camp theme, and they didn’t disappoint when it came time to hit the pink carpet on Monday night. In a blazer dress emblazoned with both the Gucci and Dapper Dan logos, plus nude tights covered in crystal, Graham stood out in a conversation-starting look—exactly what its creator had had in mind.
This year’s Met Gala theme was “Camp: Notes on Fashion” Cole really went all out. Cole chose a dual-colored suit covered in embroidered flowers with an awesome swooped ‘do. This outfit was one of the most amazing according to this year’s theme, but what do you think?
Sophie Turner and Joe Jonas came ready to make an impression at the Met Gala this year. The couple just arrived at the New York City museum to make their red carpet debut as a newly-married couple, matching in geometric ensembles. This is their first time posing on the Met Gala red carpet together.
Janelle Monae’s 2019 Met Gala outfit really came alive on the red carpet. The singer chose a custom Christian Siriano dress for the event. The creation consisted of multiple parts, including one black long sleeve, structured hips, graphic print lips on the left and an eye with feathered eyelashes on the right bodice cover her breast. The eye was even programmed to blink at times, making it look like it was winking. This was literally our favorite!
