Fashion Statement: PARIS FASHION WEEK IS HAPPENING AND WE COULDN’T MISS IT
Let’s start with Louis Vuitton and it’s amazing Spring collection! He sent out a collection that was uniquely personal—a transporting, confident return to the futuristic forms of his early work. In his own words:
I felt the need to dig into my obsessions.
In a season of solutions dressing, in which designers have been emphasizing the real-world applications of their clothes, Nicolas Ghesquière was in a world of his own creating this collection. He said he was interested in the edge between the virtual reality we experience through our social media streams and real life, which seems a lot different from everyone and very creative as well. It wasn’t a single-message collection, but rather an eclectic series of propositions. This means next year will be full of new fashions trends you can’t miss. Oh! And keep an eye out for Louis Vuitton and his spaceship!
I always had this idea of a video tunnel, like being inside someone’s digital mind.
In Demna Gvasalia words, the project came together when he met digital artist Jon Rafman at Art Basel. He and Gvasalia collaborated at a distance, with the full creative freedom given to the artist. And an amazing result came to life. With a fashion show happening inside a tunnel, this time, Gvasalia was intent on tackling what modern clothing might be and how it can rationally make sense to a new generation.
The new collection will be a series of femme-fatale replicants in strong-shoulder, nipped-waist coats. The key is to stay creative and different, this way everything you create will be powerful and will change minds all over the world.
Ok, first of all, the award for the most creative fashion show goes to Chanel. I mean, a beach?? This amazing scenery was complete with fake waves and gave Chanel’s global audience an uplifting mini break. Lagerfeld’s show sur la plage reconnected us with all the solutions that Coco Chanel first invented to boost female social confidence. And that is an amazing tribute to pay!
This is what the collection was all about: the show observed Chanel through the enthusiastic lens of a girl who loves stealing her mother’s oversize ’80s tweed jackets, suits, cropped cashmere sweaters, and quilted chain bags. And that’s a trend we will follow for sure. Everybody knows that the old is the new, new!
Julien Dossena’s superb collection for Paco Rabanne would make an exemplary study of climate on creative fashion intelligence: how skillfully a talented designer captured the universal impulse to get away from cities, took on the mix-match hippy-souvenir aesthetic, and modernized it.
I thought more about inner travel—in the mind. About a wardrobe of someone’s souvenirs mixed with her own classics.
The level of technical finesse was even more astonishing backstage—some of the chain mail had Chantilly lace merged into it so that a dress could go from ’60s futuristic at its top to fragile French lingerie in its skirt. Decade traveling in one garment. Couture-grade. One brand you should take notes and learn from!
I was thinking of paradises, about artists’ colonies of the past. There were reasons why artistic people went off to places like that—so they could live their identities.
The collection was full of black pieces like an amazing slim black cotton lace dress with an asymmetric cape thrown over one shoulder; a tuxedo with a fine tulle ruffle spilling from the front; an incredible peasant dress with a bubble skirt and balloon sleeves. But also red was thrown in there and lots of prints. Valentino won for the large variety of trends that were mixed for Spring collection 2019.
