As they started, defined the company’s personality: ‘someone’ that you want to work with. The Planet Lighting design tradition was born in the early 1900s when founder WA Iggulden set up Bentley Mfg Co in Melbourne to produce building tools to patented designs, such as the ‘Speedscrew Floor Clamp’ and ‘Bently Fibro Cutter’.
Having weathered the great depression, a lighting design division called Planet Products was established by the founder’s two sons, W.P. and J.M. Iggulden. In the1930s W.P. Iggulden designed his first remarkable table lamp, called the “Orbit”. A few years later, the Orbit was replaced his new “I” series range, which was still in production almost 60 years later.
Nowadays, Planet Lighting is considered one of the leading Australian suppliers of Medical & Surgical lights, LED and custom lighting solutions and are uniquely placed to provide the expertise and know-how required to work with lighting designers and specifiers to realise creative custom lighting ideas and concepts.
Although this is an Australian brand, they export worldwide. Their focus in on the commercial market, that is why the company has leveraged its agile design and engineering team to meet needs across multiple worldwide markets.
As the years passed by, they have expanded to include handblown artisan glassblowing facilities, a high tech LED laboratory and state of the art CNC equipment to ensure high-quality in-house capability, and a comprehensive approach to lighting manufacturing. I mean, isn’t this amazing???
We don’t know about you, but we are completely in love with this brand! They are not only amazing professionals on what they do but they also care about increasing their technology, think wisely about the future, do research and keep on growing every day, all of this never forgetting their roots.
One of the motives that makes them so special and unique, is the fact that they do medical and surgical lighting. Their design philosophy revolves around exact and effortless arm-positioning and ensuring an optimum light beam. All the medical lights that they make are developed with precision engineering and ingenuity.
“Every part of a medical light is selected based on durability and functionality – the end result is a medical light that stands the test of time and meets Australian Standards.”
One of the projects that made us blown away, was this Sunshine Coast University Hospital that started in 2015 and came to an end just last year of 2017.
By the end of this project, they were able to offer a range of free public health care services at the Sunshine Coast University Hospital, that opened in April 2017. Planet lighting supplied multiple products, including the Australian made ULED and Phantom examination lights and the imported Pentaled 12 and Pentaled 28 minor procedure lights, to this project during the construction phase, commencing early 2015, as we already told you.
Another project worth mentioning is the one they did at Royal Adelaide Hospital. Planet Lighting was involved in the initial design stages of RAH in regards to medical lighting and maintained strong communication throughout the project from start to finish. Planet provided multiple solutions in regards to the type of lights required as well as the varied installation hurdles throughout the project.
There’s another great thing that we want to share with you as well! You know how crazy we are about everything that has a story behind, a heritage, right? Then guess what? Planet Lighting did a project perfect for heritage buildings!! That’s right! And it is called Led Puck In Brass – Perfect For Heritage Buildings. Life makes sense now!
Here, the LED Puck was the obvious choice for this heritage building with brass handrail. However, we know about some lamps that could bring some additional value to space. Of course, we are talking about DelightFULL‘s Heritage line. There are so many lamps that would fit perfectly here, however, we have our personal favorite to suggest to you.
Coltrane Suspension Lamp is our ‘go to’ lamp and is one of DelightFULL’s top best sellers. With a minimalist and industrial feeling to it, it is not, however, hard to understand where the mid-century inspiration lies. For this Heritage theme, there’s nothing better to complement your project then this beautiful ceiling light.
Lighting Stores team referred only 3 but there are plenty of other projects designed by Planet Lighting that you would love to see. Let us give you some of our favorites: it includes the Bennelong Restaurant at Sydney Opera House, the Grand Hotel in Stockholm, Sweden and the Eternity Playhouse Theatre in Sydney. The latter won the AIA top heritage award for architecture in 2014.
