When lighting a painting or a drawing, Mishaan and Russell remind us of an important aspect that should not be overlooked. Despite being essential for admiring a work of art when natural light is not available, lighting and paintings are both friends and foes. “With some of the halogen lights directed into one area of the painting, it’s actually gradually burning away at the materials,” says Mishaan. Therefore, in order to prevent damaged caused by heat and ultraviolet light, do not forget to keep halogen bulbs at a safe distance from your painting or prefer LEDs.

Picture lights are the most conventional way to illuminate a painting or drawing. Nevertheless, there are other solutions more discreet and not so straightforward when it comes to the role they perform. Wall-washers, for instance, are a great way of covertly illuminating a piece whilst illuminating the whole wall homogeneously. The distribution of light is well balanced. “You don’t necessarily have to have lighting that hits every painting,” says Mishaan. “You can wash the wall instead.”

Ceiling-mounted accent lights are a gentle fixture that will illuminate your work of art without obfuscating it. You can opt for a line of recessed lamps, so that the painting is accompanied to its full extent, avoiding shadow or gloom in some areas. However, try to place the lamps in where they are not too far nor too close to the piece of art, to ensure that it is fully illuminated and preventing reflection.

Track lights are a similar solution that might also work. These match a collector’s narrow gallery, where the walls are closer and the ceiling fixtures illuminate both sides in an even way. One of the advantages of this solution is that track lights suit a number of purposes, whereas ceiling-mounted lamps are meant to light a specific area.
