Design should be about functionality and aesthetic. But who says it can’t also be about activity? Some of the most prominent product designers have created pieces and objects to be touched and tampered with. Pieces in which interaction is an expected part of getting to know and using an object. Drago Motica has put the concept of product design into question with his 2014 lamp. It is called: “/ “, slash. “The “/” Lamp is an object that gives the user the chance of choice”, stated designer Drago Motica. The user can choose to preserve it, light it, beat it, paint it, poke it, destroy it, spray it, disassemble it, write upon it. Despite having illumination as its primary function, “/ ” can serve a number of different purposes.
In essence, however, this lamp expects the intervention of its owner. It exists in a sort of intermediate level, between the creation and the conclusion. ” / ” is a living organism, in continuous motion and always depending on the one who possesses it. And afterwards, a question occurs: should or shouldn’t I? Should I interfere with the design, tamper with it, or leave it be?
The ” / ” was designed for Ubikubi. The materials used for building this lamp, concrete, beech plywood, and cork were inspired by the industrial facilities, by the construction sites: concrete, reinforcing wire, rope climbing, spool for high voltage wires.
