Lee Broom, the young promise of British lighting design, has launched both a new piece and an installation called Time Machine. Why? Both are remembrances of things past. Despite having worked longer than ten years — namely decorating bar and restaurant interiors —, Lee Broom established his design studio in 2007. This year, he decided to launch a celebratory piece: the Time Machine. It is a statuesque grandfather clock carved in Carrara marble, a true milestone in the history of product design.
The design was inspired by a clock the designer remembers from his own childhood, from his grandparents’ home. “I’ve always wanted to design a grandfather clock,” he said. “My grandparents had one in their home and I was always fascinated by its majestic appearance and its intricate mechanisms.”
The clock, stated Broom, is the ideal way to celebrate the passage of time, the closing of an era, a cycle or, in his case, of a decade. The design also includes a massive golden brass pendulum. The design was released at the Milan Design Week, along with the installation with the same name.

The installation was created with the same intent: a merry-go round memory lane. Time Machine, the exhibition, was set within a disused vault in the famous Milano Centrale train station, which now forms the new design district, Ventura Centrale. It is an actual huge white carousel, acting as a stage for Broom’s most remarkable and unforgettable pieces, from furniture to lighting and accessories.

“I decided I wanted to recreate pieces I had designed over the past ten years in a single colour palette and with new and different finishes which would give a cohesion to the presentation. I then explored interesting ways to present my designs which document the journey of the past decade in a thought-provoking way.”

His Time Machine grandfather clock is displayed as the centerpiece of the exhibition. Several of his past and most famous designs are also included in this journey through the past. These include the Crescent Lamp, Crystal Bulb, Bright on Bistro and Drunken Side Table, all reinterpreted to suit the great unifying installation, celebrating ten years of success and achievement.
