Declared by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization in 2011, the purpose of this day was to “highlight jazz and its diplomatic role of uniting people in all corners of the globe.” The idea was born from jazz pianist and UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador Herbie Hancock. Events in a Host City chosen previously culminate in an All-Star Global Concert, that involves over two-dozen jazz musicians from around the world performing at or around an historical landmark. But jazz day and jazz itseft is not just about music and sound, it can also be way of design, that’s why we listed the best lighting pieces to celebrate jazz day
Our first piece to celebrate jazz day is inspired by one of the most acclaimed jazz singers of all time Aretha Franklin. She was an American singer, songwriter, actress, pianist, and civil rights activist. In 1987, she became the first female performer to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In 2010, the Rolling Stone magazine ranked her number one on its list of the “100 Greatest Singers of All Time”.
Our lighting piece is for that reason called Aretha Suspension and it is a contemporary home interiors reinterpretation of mid-century lighting design classics that were used back in the 50’s and 60’s. The piece body is handmade in brass and the bulb holders are made of aluminum.
The second lighting piece of this list is inspired by the American composer, pianist, and leader of a jazz orchestra Duke Ellington. He wrote more than one thousand compositions, making his extensive body of work one of the largest recorded personal jazz legacy in the world. To honor this amazing bandleader and musician, was born Duke Floor, with a short silhouette and a single swing, Duke Floor Lamp is a retro-styled accessory for every single mid-century modern interior design.
The next lighting piece is a tribute to whom is considered one of the foremost exponents of cool jazz, Dave Brubeck, an American jazz pianist and composer. To honor this amazing woman, Etta Pendant was created with a nostalgic and feminine retro glow. With 20 different brass leaves, which are all hand shaped and assembled by skilled artisans.
