Declared by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization in 2011, the purpose of this day was to “highlight jazz and its diplomatic role of uniting people in all corners of the globe.” The idea was born from jazz pianist and UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador Herbie Hancock. Our first piece to celebrate jazz day is inspired by one of the most acclaimed jazz singers of all time Aretha Franklin. She was an American singer, songwriter, actress, pianist, and civil rights activist. In 1987, she became the first female performer to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In 2010, the Rolling Stone magazine ranked her number one on its list of the “100 Greatest Singers of All Time”.
Our lighting piece is for that reason called Aretha Suspension and it is a contemporary home interiors reinterpretation of mid-century lighting design classics that were used back in the 50’s and 60’s. The piece body is handmade in brass and the bulb holders are made of aluminum.
